Three months after my husband crossed over into the spiritual world, I ventured back out into the physical world. It was a beautiful late July day. I was soaking up the sun, contemplating, sketching, and journaling at a picnic table, in a not too far away town. This had been one of our favorite parks, surrounded by towering trees, with a little pond nearby. In only two weeks, “we” were going to be blessed with the birth of another grandson. I looked up into the heavens, framed by lush green leaves dappled in sunshine, and posed a question to this husband of mine who had transitioned into another realm.
“What do you want your grandchildren to know about you?”
Within minutes, my journals’ blank pages were being filled with words. Not mine. His. Through my hand – came his conversation. The message was very clear: “I am right here beside you.” I still have that journal, and hold it close to my heart. That experience was a humble testament to how closely we are ‘connected’ even when they are not ‘here’ physically. In Dear One, I intertwined Dale’s message “I am right here beside you”, with what my conversation will hopefully look like when it is my time to cross over: “I will always, always love you.”
Grief or loss, is an unexplainable experience on so many levels. As a grandparent, I wonder how can I respond to a young child who asks ‘Where did grandpa go?’. Children are the epitome of innocence and transparency. We, as adults, have much to learn from them, as we are the ones who sometimes close that door to passing, all too strongly! This book – is for all of us – not ‘just’ for grandchildren. It is for anyone suffering from heart-wrenching loss: children, sons, moms, sisters, dads, adults, parents, brothers, daughters, grandparents…anyone, searching for comfort and connection.
